He did make it back to the US – he was working as a test pilot in California on America’s first jet fighter when he was killed on a test flight. He was awarded the Medal of Honor before he died.
Ah. Thanks for that. The text of the article that was displayed in the case didn’t cover that part. I don’t know if that’s better or worse, but better to know the actual story.
