1) Delete Gmail account 2) Disable ALL email accounts 3) Add & Enable my old un-used iCloud email account 4) Add Gmail again. Works!

@jeffporten no this is on my iPhone 5s :-) It had a temporary gremlin, which seems to have moved on now.
